Columbia Neighborhood - The second oldest neighborhood in Bellingham, WA is the Columbia neighborhood. This quiet neighborhood is mostly a residential district with lots of historic homes throughout and multiple parks inside the neighborhood and several larger parks on the edge of the Columbia Neighborhood. Homes along Eldridge Ave over look Bellingham Bay and Marina from a bluff and are some of the higher priced homes among Bellingham Neighborhoods.
The area of the Columbia neighborhood nearest Bellingham Bay includes many homes recognized by the Eldridge Historical Society. Plaques bearing the names of original owners and years the homes were built hang by the front doors on many of these Victorian era homes. The northern portion of the neighborhood consists of wider streets and newer homes, mostly from the mid 1900's or newer.

Shopping areas are located primarily on Northwest Avenue and Elm Street, offering groceries, restaurants, furniture, convenience stores, a motel and many independent businesses. More shopping is available on the eastern edges of the Columbia neighborhood along both Meridian and Broadway.
Columbia Neighborhood Schools and Parks: Columbia Elementary School sits in the middle of the neighborhood, serving the many children in this family-friendly community. Elizabeth Park, the oldest park in Whatcom County, covers two city blocks and has stately trees, a restored water fountain, tennis courts, a playground, and large open grassy areas. A gazebo in Elizabeth Park hosts several concerts during the summer months. Some of the historic homes that surround Elizabeth park are some of the most expensive and highly desired real estate in the Columbia Neighborhood. The smaller Carl Lobe Park and Lorraine Ellis Parks also offer playgrounds and lawns for picnics.
Columbia Neighborhood churches include Slavic Baptist Church, 1413 Broadway: and St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 2117 Walnut Street. St Paul's Academy is located at 3000 Northwest Ave. and are currently building a brand new building directly behind them. Some note able business's and Non-profit organizations include The Salvation Army offices at 2910 Northwest Ave., Boy Scouts of America, 3313 Northwest Ave., Yeager's Sporting Store, 3101 Northwest Ave., The ReStore, 2309 Meridian St., Whatcom Educational Credit Union branch, 2600 Meridian St., and First Security Mortgage., Meridian St.
Columbia Neighborhood Streets: Columbia Neighborhood starting near Bellingham Bay is framed in with streets like Eldridge Ave., on the southwest to Squalicum Parkway on the northwest side to E Maplewood Ave in the north, Meridian St along the eastern edge to Broadway on the south east which joins up with Ave. Elm St. and Northwest Ave. are two streets the run north & south through Columbia Neighborhood and are heavily traveled.
In the southern section of Columbia Neighborhood where most of the older historic homes are found the streets the run east and west include W Connecticut St., North St., Monroe St, Washington St, and Madison St. Streets in the south that run north and south include Kulshan St, Elizabeth St, Park St, Walnut St, Utter St, Williams St, Victor St, Henry St, Lynn St, Jaeger St, West St, Cherry St, Keesling St, Spruce St, Lafayette St., and Madrona St.
The newer section in the Northern area of Columbia Neighborhood include streets like Lynn St, Tulip Rd, E Victor St, W Illinois St, Victor St, Williams St, and Utter St. Streets east of Northwest Ave. to Meridian include W Oregon St, Indiana St, W Illinois St, W Maryland St, Elizabeth St, Elm St, Kulshan St, and Walnut St.
The Eldridge Society has a site that would provide more useful information on the area. The Columbia Neighborhood is actually served by The Eldridge Society web site. This neighborhood could easily be called the Eldridge Neighborhood and often thats the case when it comes to locals.
